Swedish Singer Meja Joins Artists Help Japan!

Meja, a popular Swedish musician is heading Artists Help Japan--Sweden Team!
She will be working with Swedish non profit to get their own fund raising effort going.
Details will be announced very soon

Last year, she did an album called Animeja, a collection of Ghibli cover songs in English.   She has become extremely popular after her beautiful adaptation of Ghibli songs we all loved.   She came out of her way to contact us because Japan was such a special place for her.

She contacted us a day after we created Artists Help Japan Fund and we have been talking to her back and forth to maximize her charisma to help our effort to help Japan. There are a few great ideas, we are tossing around.  Stay tuned with Meja's magic!

Check out one of her Ghibli songs on youtube.

Grassroots Event #4 -----The Strange Invaders

Tonight, at KJ Farrell's Bellmore NY, this rock band the Strange Invaders are performing to support Artists Help Japan Movement.   The event's proceeds will go to Artists Help Japan Fund.

We we first received the notice about their fund raising gig, we were a little surprised.  We did not expect a band from New York to find out about and support our cause.  This may not be a big event like the upcoming fund raising auction One--ひとつ in San Francisco, but this means JUST AS BIG to us artists community as well as to people in Japan.  How inspiring.

We were simply curious how they decided to join the force.  So we asked the band member Jason Giummule a few questions...

Q1: How did you find out about Artists Help Japan Movement? and why did you decide to join this cause?

We found out about the Artists Help Japan Movement through a suggestion from a friend online. Like most bands, we don't have much money to donate on our own, but this is a way that we can help.

Q2: any of your band members have personal connections with Japan?

The personal connection we have with Japan is just trying to have the humanism which lacks throughout our culture nowadays. They are in need, this is a way that we can help.

Q3:Do you believe in the power of art(in your case music) to provide something more than a monetary fund to make a difference? Is this sort of fund raising gig something you guys have done in the past too?

3. Of course, we are hoping that our music can be used in other areas associated with this cause. The other artist performing that night is a great rock singer/songwriter by the name of "Grace Read", that without hesitation wanted to be involved. Whether it be online ads, or commercials, if there is any way our music can be involved in other areas, please let us know, as all proceeds would go to Artists Help Japan. Our daily struggle as Lower-Class Americans living paycheck to paycheck is nothing in comparison to the devastation happening in Japan. No, but we will be a part of as many that will have us. Be in touch if there is anything else that we can do to help out with our music.

Update from Japan----Mercy Corps/Peace Winds Japan

 Hi everyone,

We thought we would share with you how Mercy Corps and Peace Winds Japan are effectively helping victims.  With thousands of survivors in need for help, they are making progress most effectively.

Here is the message we got from Japan.

Japan is going through one of the worst -- and most complex -- emergencies in recent memory. An earthquake, tsunami waves and a nuclear crisis have destroyed cities and displaced thousands of survivors. But, with your generous support, we're rushing relief to them alongside our partner Peace Winds.

Here are the latest developments from our emergency response team:

Yesterday, we delivered 510 kerosene space heaters and 80 family-sized emergency tents to survivors who are braving frigid temperatures in northeastern Japan.
In all, the team has distributed the following supplies to families in four disaster-stricken cities:
  • three large shelters that can accommodate up to 100 people
  • 164 smaller tents that hold up to five people each
  • 1,720 blankets
  • 1,210 kerosene space heaters
  • 100,000 medical face masks
  • towels, mattresses, clothing and bottled water
  • 570 blue tarps for additional shelter
  • and food items such as bread, instant rice, apples and oranges.
Next week, we will begin providing post-trauma help to Japanese children using Comfort for Kids, a program that helps children recover from the emotional effects of a large-scale disaster. We've used Comfort for Kids in a variety of emergency responses, including the aftermaths of the Haiti earthquake and Hurricane Katrina.

Artists Help Japan in England!

We have been contacted by artists in England and they want to support Artists Help Japan.  We obviously did not want to bring any fund from Europe to the U.S. to eventually send over to Japan.
So we created our own Artists Help Japan in England!  It can take funds in British pound.

This fund we created in England will go directly to Civic Force.   Civic Force is another highly regarded local NPO in Japan founded by Kensuke Onishi who also founded Peace Winds Japan which we introduced to you a few days ago on this blog. The reason why we decided to work with Mercy Corps is that they are in partnership with Peace Winds.   Both Civic Force and Peace Winds Japan are considered to be great choices that are doing effective work in the rescue efforts in hard hit areas in northern Japan.

If you would like to help victims in Japan effectively in British Pound, please go here!

Fund Total As of March 24th

$60,155 (give2asia = $59,869. Mercy Corps = $286)

Yes, it is a great number for a grassroots effort.   As death toll, however, finally reached 10,000, 17,000 still missing, and over 240,000 had no home to go back to.... our efforts seem so small.  Ironically, the situation in Libya has turned people's eye away from Japan a bit.

...Of course, no time to whine. We must keep going.
With 10 events planned in April, we hope to get our momentum back in track.

Grassroots Event #4--ToonSeum, Pittsburgh

Grassroots Event #3 ----The Relief by the Pint, San Francisco

I"m not sure if this can be called a grassroots event but the SF based media company Viz Media is hosting a happy hour fund raising event, The Relief By The Pint tomorrow in San Francisco.  10% of its proceeds will be donated to Artists Help Japan Fund with Gve2Asia!

More Artists Are Being Creative to Help

There is so much money we all have.  There is so much time we can give.
But artists are creative and innovative.
There are so many ways to help.

LA based Japanese concept artist Patric Awa has negotiated with this service to sell prints of his beautiful painting and it's entire proceeds will go towards Artists Help Japan Fund with Gve2Asia.
The death toll of earthquake/tsunami victims is reaching to 10,000 now with over 16,000 still missing.
250,000 people have no home to go back to.  In this devastating situation, Patric showed us one creative and inspiring way to help.

By the way, I just found out that the original painting of this above will be up for the fund raising auction at ONE--ひとつ event on 4/2.  Wow, I will be bidding on this one for sure...

Mercy Corps is Joining Artists Help Japan!

We are proud to announce that we are adding another U.S. NPO that can effectively use our donation to help devastating situation in Japan.

While we are still strong supporters of Give2Asia, we wanted to add another NPO to give a choice to our donors.  With extensive research talking with our friends in non-profit community in Japan, we came to realize that this Japanese NPO Peace Winds Japan has a great reputation managing the situation very effectively.   As you may have listened to NPR last friday morning, the situation in Japan requires special attention and you really want to find a fund that's working with effective Japanese NPOs.

And the US. NPO working in partnership with Peace Winds Japan is Mercy Corps.  Mercy Corps is highly regarded and large non profit as you can see their efficiency rating on Charity Navigator.

People asked us why we are not donating to large places like Red Cross.  Many large corporations and big name celebrities are always donating to large places like Red Cross.
We have nothing against Red Cross or other large places.  Aside from the very high fees, well funded non profit can do lots of great things.

But we also believe there are NPOs that are very effective despite their size.  To us, having partnerships with good local Japanese NPOs is essential.

So now with Mercy Corps, we have a choice of two to help.
We are proud to have both Mercy Corps and Give2Asia to help us bring artist communities together!

P.S. For European donors, we are about to set up funds there as well.  Stay tuned!

It Is A Movement

With the heated situation in Libya over the weekend, the public focus might have derailed a bit from what's happening in Japan. But there are still many many people trying to come up with what they can to help people in Japan.  We have received more fund raising event proposals.

There are some art communities that will donate their proceeds to Red Cross but still want to join our force of Artists Help Japan.   We absolutely welcome them!  Ultimately, this is a movement rather than just one particular fund.  We have our recommendations as far as where we want to dedicate our funds to. But the point of this movement is really, what we can do together as artists.

Talk about the fund, in the meantime, we have done some extensive research for what we believe is most effective to bring our funds to.  While we still believe give2Asia is an excellent choice, we will be announcing more NPO partners very soon to have more choices!

There are some super super exciting events that will join our Artists Help Japan Movement.
We are dropping our jaws as we see proposals from some of the communities.
It's getting more than what we expected.
Stay Tuned!!

Art Block for Ghana

Hi everyone

It's been a week since we started Artists Help Japan movement.  We raised over $50, 000.  Yes, the funding has slowed down a bit as expected.  But this is just a beginning.  As you know, there are still tens of thousand people waiting for help over there.  The local NPOs have reported that it was much worse than they expected and it require a lot more to assemble this rescue mission.  We are going to announce quite a few fund raising events this coming week.  Let the real work begin!    Stay tuned.

While we are building our art movement, Art Block for Ghana was one source of inspiration to bring artists together for a worthy cause.

Art Block for Ghana is taking bids as we speak here.   Don’t miss it!
We have less than a day left to bid on some amazing pieces donated for this cause.
This project is led by our beloved friend Rachel Tap-Daniels and Picture Books Project Foundation.

This project is a fund raising auction involving more than 200 artists across the country from illustration to animation industry.   They are trying to build home for kids in Ghana.  It’s a beautiful project.  And there are lots of beautiful pieces donated for this project.

If you are new to fund raising art auction, check this out.  And get a taste of this wonderful thing artists can do cuz there will be a lot more coming in the next few weeks to help Japan!

Picture Books Project Foundation is a 501c NPO and they will be one of the main supporters of Artists Help Japan Fund.   We are very very proud to be working with them to make Artists Help Japan movement even stronger.

Grassroots Event #1 -----Rise Japan, San Francisco

While Japan is still struggling with cool down effort of the nuclear plants, there are still over 20,000 people still left out waiting to be rescued.  The scale of help they need is astronomical.   It at times seems hopeless but we need to keep moving.

Speaking of....

I just shared about my grassroots fund raising method in the previous entry, and now, New York based science fiction illustrator Bruce Jensen did his own version selling 5 of his original paintings for $100 and donated $500 to Artists Help Japan Fund.  I'm speechless...

Who else is following this grassroots movement??

Another way to help

Hello,

Nuclear crisis is getting worse and worse.
On top of all the victims from Tsunami and the earthquakes where over 20,000 people are still stuck waiting to be rescued, they have to deal with potentially one of the worst nuclear disasters in the world history.

It is just excruciating to say the least.

Again, what we can do from here may be small, but this small voice of artists community can still be something.  We believe it is.

As of 10 pm  Tuesday, 3 plus days after we set up this fund, we raised over $23,000.
It is absolutely amazing and there are lots of generous souls out there.

But there can be a lot more done.  Even if you don't have anymore money to give.

Here is how

There have been many artists who have sold their art work to fund raise on their own.  I tried last night posting 5 signed copies of my children's book as well as limited edition prints of my paintings to see if anyone would buy them for slightly higher prices and I'd donate the entire payment towards Aritsts Help Japan Fund.

6,7 hours later, I have received 15 orders.   In the end, I sold extra copies to pile up my donation to $1520.   Basically it was a collaboration donation between artist and buyer.   No one had to pay too much but the result came out to be the number I can't afford otherwise.

If you have already donated as much as you could afford, this may be another way to help.
One advantage being an artist!

Imagine, if 1,000 artists did this, we can potentially reach $ 1 million over night.
Am I dreaming?  Maybe.

I say, it's worth the try.

Answering Your Questions about the Fund

Situations in Japan have gone worse every hour.  This is really heartbreaking. On top of rising number of victims from the earthquakes and tsunami, it is now facing the potential of one of the worst nuclear plant disasters in the world history.

What we can do from here may be small.  Very small for the help they need.
But small is still better than nothing.

Since we set up this fund on Saturday, we have raised over $16,000 in just a few days.  We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the community.   And many many people out there are on the same page with our belief.

>>>>DONATE NOW!

We also received offers from a few groups that they are planning to have a benefit event and want to donate their proceeds to this fund.  One of them is a group of musicians and yes, musicians are artists too!  We will keep you posted with the details of the events.

Also, Picture Book Project Foundation, who has set up the successful fund raiser Art Blocks for Ghana will be donating a part of their proceeds from the Ghana auction to Artists Help Japan Fund.  We will be working closely with Picture Book Project for our future fund raising projects.

*****Ok, here are the answers to the questions we have received *****

*Artists have done many successful fund raising auctions such as Totoro Forest Project and Art Blocks for Ghana.    Are you planning another art auction to raise money for this?

YES!  We believe there are things artists can do!
We are in the process of setting up something like that.
This time, we may have to be more creative and ask each artist to step up to do more than just creating artwork.   We will keep you posted.  Please keep your eye on this blog.

* I want to contribute to this from Europe/Canada.  What do I do?

This fund is mainly for US donors.  If you live outside of the U.S. there must be local NPOs collecting funds to help people in Japan.  We would hate to lose your fund by transferring your currency to U.S. dollar which would eventually go to Japan.   All the major NPOs should have local offices accepting donations in your region.

Of course, doesn't mean we won't need your support.  If you can spread the words out on your blog, facebook, we'd really appreciate it.

*Where does this money go?

Artists Help Japan fund will go directly to Give2Asia's main Japan Earthquake Fund.
Artists Help Japan is created as a simple portal to get artists united to help.  We have worked with Give2Asia and we believe they will use the fund wisely for what's most needed in Japan.

*How is Give2Asia planning to spend the fund?

Here is the message I got from Give2Asia program officer Gillian Ira Yeoh

Give2Asia Disaster Response Strategy
Since 2001, Give2Asia has raised over US$27 million to support relief and recovery efforts for over 20 disasters across Asia. Based on our experiences, Give2Asia has developed a disaster response strategy to ensure the most efficient and effective use of the funds.

Give2Asia’s primary focus after a disaster is to support medium- and long-term recovery efforts, because funding traditionally flows to immediate relief and drops off well before the recovery is complete.  We also support relief activities, especially when the needs are particularly acute and prolonged.  While each disaster in each location is unique, we generally support programs that facilitate sustainable recovery for the affected communities, including psychosocial healing for survivors, education programs to get youth back in school as quickly as possible, and skills training to help rebuild livelihoods. We believe in supporting local organizations that have established relationships with the affected communities whenever possible.  These organizations have the knowledge and relationships to provide appropriate assistance that respects and involves the survivors.  Because conditions and needs change rapidly in a post-disaster situation, Give2Asia strikes a balance that is flexible while also ensuring transparency and accountability as to how funds are used.

Through our on-the-ground presence and advisors, we have knowledge of and access to many local non-profit organizations. Our local advisor is providing us with updates on the situation and emerging needs on an ongoing basis, and will recommend local organizations and projects responding to the disaster as information becomes available.  We will keep our community informed as we learn of new facts and opportunities to help.

*Why Give2Asia?   Is it better than Red Cross or other NPOs?

Give2Asia is only one of the many ways for you to help.    Give2Asia was an NPO that was able to set up a portal for artists very quickly and of course, they are well regarded with their work in Japan.   But this does not mean Give2Asia is the only option for you.

There are many well run NPOs out there that set up funds for Japan Earthquake/Tsunami disaster.
Here are some we can recommend based on their reputation of their efficient fund management as well as their work in Japan.

Doctor's Without Borders
International Rescue Committee
Direct Relief International
SaveTheChildren
Mercy Corps

Aritsts Help Japan fund is created mainly to bring artists together to help Japan as we believe there are special roles we artists play in the world.  We are in the process of starting with partnership with some of these NPOs above.

*Is this fund related to Pixar in any way?

No.  Some of the organizers happen to be Pixar artists but this fund does not represent the company in any ways.

Artists Help Japan ---Earthquake & Tsunami 2011

Dear Artists and Supporters

On March 11, an 8.9 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan near the city of Sendai. The earthquake generated a massive tsunami with waves as high as 30 feet, resulting in floods, fires and the closure of airports and transit systems. Hundreds of people were killed, and homes, fields and towns were flooded or destroyed.

Artists Help Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fund is responding to the immediate needs of survivors as well as short-term to long-term recovery projects undertaken by the affected communities.

Founded by Dice Tsutsumi, an art director at Pixar Animation Studios who was also behind 2008 Totoro Forest Project to help preserve Sayama Forest in Japan and Sketchtravel Project.

We are partnering with Give2Asia, which has a local team based in Tokyo to assess the current situation and to obtain more information on the needs of survivors.  Give2Asia helped animation industry famous Totoro Forest Project efficiently send fund to Japan and has a great reputation when it comes to humanitarian efforts in Asia.

All the funds will go to Give2Asia/Asian Foundations existing fund towards Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fund

You might have already helped through other venues?  Then please help spread the words on your blog and facebook!
